The first female bishop to sit in the UK’s Parliament took her seat in the House of Lords today (26/10/2015).
The Rt Revd Rachel Treweek, the Bishop of Gloucester, becomes one of the 26 Lords Spiritual in the second chamber.
Under the Lords Spiritual (Women) Act 2015 passed this year, there is a time-limited provision of 10 years for vacancies among the Lords Spiritual to be filled by women bishops.
This followed the Bishops and Priests (Consecration and Ordination of Women) Measure 2014 which was authorised by the Church of England to enable the appointment of women as bishops.
